Welcome to the Marine Biology Program at California State University Long Beach! We offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology to undergraduates, and a Master of Science degree in Biology for graduate students carrying out original research in marine biology.
Students working towards the Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology enroll in small upper division lecture and lab classes taught by Ph.D.-level faculty. They take frequent field trips to nearby bay, estuary, rocky intertidal, and open ocean habitats. There are many opportunities for motivated undergraduates to carry out original scientific research. A Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from CSULB has helped many of our past students to successfully compete for marine biology-related jobs in resource management agencies and companies. Many of our alumni also go on to do graduate work in the marine sciences.
Our faculty also advise graduate students seeking to earn the Master of Science in Biology. These students design and carry out basic and applied research that moves the field of marine biology forward. Coursework strengthens student skills in research methods, experimental design, statistical analysis, and science communication. Our graduates pursue a wide diversity of science-related careers, including teaching at the community college level, working in biological consulting firms, or holding positions in regional, state, or federal resource management agencies. Many continue their studies in Ph.D. programs.

Prerrequisitos
Freshman
Our freshman begin as pre-Marine Biology majors and are part of a close-knit cohort who take many of the same classes together. Once they reach their milestones of successfully passing one semester of calculus, two semesters of chemistry, and General Education courses in Written Communication, Oral Communication, and Critical Thinking, students become declared Marine Biology majors.
Admission to all majors at CSULB is highly competitive and students are encouraged to obtain the highest GPA they can while in high school. In addition, students are encouraged to take both math and chemistry at the high school level in order to be fully prepared for college-level courses once they are admitted.
