Background

The Doctorate programs in Nautical Sciences appear in the decade of 1990, with the incorporation of the old Schools of Nautical Studies to the University.

Objectives

The interuniversity doctoral program in Nautical Engineering, Marine Engineering, and Naval Radioelectronics aims to achieve the following objectives: Provide paths of research in academic and professional aspects of the maritime sector; facilitate interaction with other university lines of research related to maritime activity and, in particular, the study of ships as basic elements of transport by sea, and also, conduct courses to adapt to the real needs and future industrial and maritime activities before incorporating new technologies.

Justification of the need for the programme

The interuniversity doctoral program in Nautical Engineering, Marine Engineering, and Naval Radio Electronics, appears from the convenience to joint efforts by schools and faculties of Nautical Studies in Spain, and responds to the need to provide access to postgraduate studies to the graduates in Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering.

This program is unique in Spain, with the participation of 5 schools or faculties of Nautical Sciences

Within the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, this interuniversity doctoral program is the continuity of the Master studies taught at the Faculty of Nautical Studies in Barcelona. The program accommodates students both from Spain, as from America and elsewhere, and is based at the Faculty of Nautical Studies in Barcelona. Students are located in the centroid of a major economic area and high population density.

Requirements for complementary methodological or scientific training courses (the official master's degree that these courses belong to must be specified)

The previous career requisites are:

- Access through a license degree related or speciualized in the nautical-maritime sector,

- To be done at least 20 ECTS in official masters or to have an official master degree, related with the maritime sector.

- The professional exercise of maritime activities, even in the case that the master degree would not be related with the maritime sector.

Recommended entry profile

The recommended entry profile will be students who have completed a Master Degree, with or without research track, with a nautical profile, at any university.

Nautical profile refers to those masters whose curriculum covers various subjects own nautical marine science or, as in the case of masters: Master in Nautical Engineering and Maritime Management, Master in Nautical Engineering and Maritime Transport, Master in Nautical Engineering and Maritime Transport Management, Master in Marine Engineering, Master in Marine Engineering and Master in Engineering Maintenance and Naval Radio Electronics. These masters are merely mentioned by way of example, without being appropriate for this priority or preference with other masters.

Other 5-year careers: Degree in Nautical and Maritime Transport, Degree in Marine Engineering, Degree in “Marina Civil” (sections Bridge or Machines)

Finally, within the income profile all students who come from other doctoral programs related to marine sciences, shipbuilding, naval engineering, naval and ocean engineering, and marine radio, foreigners or nationals established under previous university ordinations, and students which are in possession of a Spanish official university degree obtained under previous university ordinations and comply with the requirements of access provided in the RD 99/2011. However, they may be admitted to the program candidates who come from other related Masters or PhD programs (domestic or foreign) which satisfies the conditions proposed in the RD 99/2011. The Inter-University Academic Committee will decide their eligibility based mainly on the specific merits that the candidate possesses.

Access Requirements

Access requirements established in the RD 99/2011 and the regulations approved by the Universities of Cantabria, La Laguna, Oviedo, Basque Country and Catalonia Polytechnic will be followed. As indicated by Article 6 of the Royal Decree, in general, for access to an official doctoral program it will be needed to be in possession of the Spanish official degree courses, or equivalent, and Official Master.

They may also access those at any of the following cases:

  • Be in possession of a Spanish official university degree or another member country of the European Higher Education Area, which qualify them for admission to Master in accordance with the provisions of Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007 of 29 October and have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in official university studies, of which at least 60, they must be of Masters level.
  • Be in possession of a Spanish official title of graduate whose duration, in accordance with rules of Community law, it is at least 300 ECTS credits. These graduates must attend mandatory training supplements Article 7.2 of this standard, unless the curriculum of the corresponding undergraduate degree credits include research training, educational value equivalent to the credits from research concerns Master studies.
  • University graduates who, after obtaining a place in training in the relevant entrance examination positions for specialist medical training, have passed positive evaluation at least two years of training in a program for official qualification of some of the specialties in Health Sciences.
  • Be in possession of evidence obtained from foreign education systems without their homologation, after verification by the university that it accredits a level equivalent to that of the Spanish official title of Master and entitling the country issuing training the qualification for admission to doctoral studies. This admission does not imply in any case the approval of the previous title of which is held by the applicant or its recognition for purposes other than access to doctoral teachings.
  • Be in possession of another Spanish PhD degree obtained under previous university ordinations.
  • Hold a Diploma of Advanced Studies obtained in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 778/98, of 30 April, or had reached the Research Aptitude as regulated by Royal Decree 185/85 of 23 January.
