Renewable energy is changing the energy industry fast, creating a more diverse sector with huge opportunities for new technologies, new businesses and new ideas. The Master’s in Renewable Energy (MSc RENE) provides in-depth knowledge of all major renewable technologies and gives you the opportunity to specialise in areas that interest you most. With courses in business skills and innovation management our goal is to transform you into an energy engineer, entrepreneur or innovator of the future.

After application

You application will be processed as follows:

  • We check your application and your documents to see whether you meet our academic and language eligibility standards
  • The evaluation committee for each Master’s programme checks your eligibility against their specific admission requirements
  • The programme evaluation committees rank the selected applicants to their programme
  • Top-ranked applicants may be called for an online interview or test
  • All applicants are informed on the outcome of the selection process

All students, including those in receipt of an InnoEnergy scholarship, agree to the terms of the . Any breaches of the code of conduct may result in the student agreement being dissolved.

Students can find other ways to finance their participation in the InnoEnergy Master’s School through the scholarship portal.


  • Scholarship possibility. Excellent students can be nominated for a monthly allowance of up to€750/month for a maximum of 24 months.
  • You can be nominated for this scholarship irrespective of whether your application has been received during round 0, round 1 and round 2.

For Non-EU* Students:

  • Scholarship possibility: Excellent students can be nominated for a scholarship including both a participation fee waiver and a one-time travel and installation support of up to €1000**, and a monthly allowance of up to €750 for a maximum of 24 months.
  • You can be nominated for this scholarship only when applying in application round 0 (for MSc Clean Fossil and Alternative Fuels Energy, EMINE) or round 1 (for all MSc programmes – intake Fall 2016)

* By ‘EU students’, we mean students with citizenship in one of the EEA countries (all EU member states and Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland) or Switzerland. ‘Non-EU students’ are therefore classified as all students who do not comply with the above definition of an ‘EU student’. 

** Only applicants conforming to the definition of “non-EU” above can be eligible for the one time travel and installation support.

How to apply for a scholarship? When applying for one of our MSc programmes, please tick the appropriate box in the application form that you would like to apply for a scholarship.

Code of conduct: Applicants who apply for a scholarship do agree to the terms of the KIC SE Student Code of Conduct.

Scholarship levels: Scholarships are awarded to the highest ranking applicants per programme; scholarship levels depend on the budget available for each programme and may therefore vary. The ranking is based on several criteria such as academic performance, quality of previous education and university, experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, etc. Please note that it is not possible to appeal decisions in relation to scholarships; the selection results (ranking) as such do not constitute grounds for an appeal. It is not possible to transfer a KIC InnoEnergy MSc scholarship to another KIC InnoEnergy programme or to a non-KIC InnoEnergy programme.

Scholarships paid in Poland are presently subject to taxation in accordance with the provisions of Polish law. Subject to certain conditions, benefits paid by an entity having its registered office outside of Poland may be exempt from tax on the basis of Article 21 points 39, 40 and 40b of the Act of 26 July 1991. AGH shall endeavour to arrange a tax exemption for the Student. However, a final decision in this regard is issued by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education in accordance with the binding provisions on personal income tax (Journal of Laws of 2012 No. 361 as amended).

Other financial support

In addition to applying for scholarships you can apply for Erasmus+ study loans. They have been created by the European Commission to make it easier to study a full degree programme abroad.

Erasmus+  makes it possible for students who want to take a full Master’s-level degree in an Erasmus+ programme country to apply for a loan at a bank in their home country.

Please note that the Erasmus+ study loan programme is not financed or organized by KIC InnoEnergy.


Having successfully completed the programme (120 ECTS), you will be awarded the Master of Science (M.Sc.) as a double-degree of the two universities you have attended.

Giving you a unique education comprising industrial practice, innovation and entrepreneurship expertise, and advanced leadership skills, complemented by the active participation of InnoEnergy industrial partners MSc RENE enables you to launch your career in a wide range of renewable energy businesses or research settings.

In particular, you will gain:

  • Broad knowledge of sustainable energy systems and sources, and the ability to judge the technical, economical, social, and environmental impacts of each.
  • Deep understanding of individual renewable energy technologies, as well as energy management, planning, economy and market contexts.
  • Analytical capabilities, enabling you to formulate and manage technical problems from a system perspective and to solve problems around energy conversion, transportation, storage and utilisation.
  • Interpersonal skills, including leadership, project management, team working, business management, and communication.
  • The ability to think beyond boundaries and to generate new ideas and create new or significantly improved products, services, processes, and businesses.
  • An understanding of cutting-edge research and innovation methods, business management, and business creation principles.

A double degree

The MSc RENE programme requires you to study at two separate universities in two different countries. The programme gives you the opportunity to start building your international network by working closely with fellow students from around the world, while the business-focused elements of the curriculum explore how to work in and manage multi-cultural teams.

You spend your first year at one of the following institutions, and your second year at another:

  • IST: Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon, Portugal
  • KTH: Royal Institute of Technology, in Stockholm, Sweden
  • École Polytechnique, Université Paris-Saclay, in Paris, France
  • UPC: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech, in Spain

You will also attend courses at the ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain and the Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics in Portugal

After successfully completing the programme, you will receive a degree from each of your chosen universities:

  • IST: Master of Energy Engineering and Management
  • KTH: Master of Science, fromKTH: Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
  • École Polytechnique: Graduate Degree Programme in Energy Environment: Science Technology and Management (STEEM)
  • UPC: Master of Energy Engineering

You also receive a diploma from ESADE and from the Católica Lisbon School.


Before applying, make sure you can meet all the admissions criteria:

  • A completed Bachelor’s degree (worth a minimum of 180 ECTS credits)
  • English language proficiency
  • Programme-specific requirements

If you are in your final year of undergraduate education, you can also apply and receive a conditional offer.

You must have completed a Bachelor’s degree worth a minimum of 180 ECTS credits OR an equivalent academic qualification from an internationally recognised university.

  • The content of your Bachelor’s degree is more important than the name of your degree, and should be directly relevant to the Master’s programme(s) you are applying for. Please check the specific requirements given for each programme below.
  • If you do not have a relevant Bachelor’s degree, but you have studied longer technical programmes and have completed courses with an equivalent of 180 ECTS credits, you may submit an application to be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • In order to present your ETS score record, please make sure to order it in advance.


Conditional Acceptance

  • If you are in your final year of undergraduate education, and expect to qualify before the programme’s start-date, you may apply to an InnoEnergy Master’s programme. If accepted, you will receive a conditional offer, pending confirmation of successful completion of your Bachelor’s degree.

English proficiency

All our degree programmes are entirely taught in English.

English proficiency tests are waived for applicants with:

  • A higher education degree (University Bachelor's or Master's) fully instructed in English from a university or a university of applied sciences physically located in an EU or EEA country or Switzerland. The official language of the degree programme has to be stated in the degree certificate or its supplement, or in your transcript of records. We cannot accept statements from professors, or any other documentation regarding language of instruction.
  • A higher education degree (University Bachelor's or Master's) in English from a university that is physically located in one of the following countries: USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand. Please note that branches from universities outside of the mentioned countries can also not be accepted to be granted a waiver.

In all other cases, we need evidence of one of the following qualifications and scores from tests taken within the past two years.
