This course provides an introduction to marine geophysics aimed to establish a theoretical base for geological interpretation of marine geophysical data. The course covers the theory behind standard marine geophysical mapping methods, with focus on acoustic methods. The course includes a brief historical overview of how geophysical methods have been used to explore the oceans and how seafloor mapping has contributed to understanding of Earth's evolution.

This course complements the on-site course “Marine geophysical mapping methods, 7.5 hp”, which is a practical mapping course based on field work in the waters surrounding Stockholm university’s field station at the island of Askö in the southern Stockholm archipelago. There are some unavoidable overlaps between the two courses since the onsite course does not require the course Marine geophysics 7.5 hp as a pre-requisite.

Prerequisites

60 ECTS credits in geology or earth science. Or 30 ECTS credits in geology and 15 ECTS credits mathematics and 15 ECTS credits Physics/Geophysics. Information about entry requirements on universityadmissions.se

Learning outcomes

After completing the course you are expected to:

  • know the most widely applied marine geophysical surveying methods
  • understand and describe the basic theories behind the most widely applied marine geophysical surveying methods
  • understand the principles of how marine geophysical data are interpreted geologically
  • be able to describe the role of marine geophysical methods have had for the understanding of the Earth's geological development
