The Department of English Language and Literature trains professionals with knowledge of English language and various cultures of English speaking countries. One-third of the curriculum is devoted to practical English to help students learn essential English communication skills as globalized world citizens. It also offers various lectures on the English language, literature and cultures of English speaking countries.
The primary characteristic of the department is its focus on students’ improvement of English proficiency through practical English courses. Students take multiple classes with instructors who speak English as their native tongue, including courses focused on speaking, listening, reading, writing, and other practical subjects.
In addition, the Department of English Language and Literature conducts competitions and prizes each semester to encourage students' studies. Hence, many students of our department have been selected as exchange students in universities overseas.
Moreover, our students may take a double major in shipping, maritime law, international trade & economics, public administration, East Asian studies and European studies. Students graduating with a dual degree can offer the full range of advantages in their fields.
Recently, to meet the specialized maritime goals of our university, we offer specialized courses in Marine English and English Language as an International Language to produce professionals in the offshore, shipping and port sectors.
The programme includes an introduction to Maritime English, which focuses both on important vocabulary used in the fields of general ship arrangements, nautical terms, and SMCP and on reading comprehension of articles or texts for maritime-related media news.
