FOUNDATION & HISTORY  

Karadeniz Technical University, Surmene Faculty of Marine Sciences, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department; It was founded in 1996 and started teaching education in the 1996-1997 academic year. Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Ph.D. program was opened in 2014-2015 academic year. The Department consists of three branches: Shipbuildıng, Ship Hydromechanics and Marine Engineering. The department has 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 3 assistant professor and 10 research assistants.

QUALIFICATION AWARDED  

The students who have successfully completed a minimum of 21 local credits (equivalant to 60 ECTS credits) from thought courses delivered within the graduate programme of the department and in related fields, achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and prepared and successfully defended a thesis are given given Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D) in NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND MARINE ENGINEERING

1 - Master's Degree in acceptable fields,
2 - Sufficient score from the National Academic Staff & Graduate Education Exam (ALES),

OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  

The curriculum prepares students for careers in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering professions within maritime sectors, and ensures that, upon graduation, students are eligible for employment or post-graduate study. Additionally, the Department maintains a nationally and internationally recognized research program that addresses all aspects of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  

Recognition of prior learning is at the beginning stage in the Turkish Higher Education System. Karadeniz Technical University and hence the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is no exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each term at the University for courses compulsory in the curriculum, such as Foreign Languages and Basic Computing. The students who have completed the learning process for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum, and this grade is entered into the transcript of the student.

The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed a minimum of 21 local credits (60 ECTS) from thought courses with a CGPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00, and prepared and defended a thesis.
KTU Graduate Education Regulations

EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS  

The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of 81-100 is assigned a letter grade of AA, 76-80 BA, 70-75 BB, 60-69 CB, 50-59 CC, 45-49 DC, 40-44 DD, 30-39 FD and 0-29 FF. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to BB are pass

DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : 

There are a R&D lab, computer lab. for 30 student and a technical drawing class In our department. There is also a model ship for inclining experiment.
