Conservation of Adriatic sandbanks: assessment of a Marine Protected Area effectiveness by zoomacrobenthos analysis

The Marine Protected Area Torre del Cerrano was investigated to assess the efficiency of conservation measures for this MPA. The MPA is located on the Italian coast of the Adriatic Sea in the province of Teramo. It was implemented in October, 2010 and it consists of sandy bottom habitats. Core samples were taken within and outside the MPA to test for differences in nutrient fluxes and macrobenthic and meiofaunal communities between the two sites. The macrobenthic analysis showed significant differences in communities within and outside the MPA, with overall community diversity higher within the MPA. These preliminary results appear to show that the MPA is effective in its conservation goals. Further research will combine nutrient flux data analysed from both sites with macrobenthic and meiofaunal data to study the functional link between communities and nutrient recycling.
