The Marine Science Study Program (MSSP) of Hasanuddin University was established in 1988 under the name of Marine Science and Technology Study Program, under Minister of Education Decree No. 18/DIKTI/Kep/1988 dated 14 May 1988. In 1996, the name was changed to Marine Science Study Program (MSSP), under Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No.532/DIKTI/Kep/1996, and accommodated within the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries under Minister of Education and Culture Decree No. 036/0/1996 dated 29 January 1996.

The establishment of MSSP is very relevant to the achievement of the Hasanuddin University vision as a Centre of Excellence for the development of the humanities, science, technology, arts and culture, based upon the concept of Indonesian Maritime Continent. In addition, the establishment of the Marine Science Department is one implementation of the UNHAS marine/maritime orientation and science-based principles. Currently, the Marine Science Study Program of the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries holds accreditation grade A, issued by the National Accreditation Board, valid for the period 15th November 2014 – 14th November 2019.

The MSSP vision is to become a leading institution in Indonesian coastal and marine education, conservation and resource exploration by 2018. To achieve this vision, the study program has the following mission: To provide coastal and marine biological resource exploration and conservation education, research, science and technology development and community outreach. Strategies to achieve the MSSP vision and mission include continual improvement in terms of updating the instructional processes and the supporting facilities both on-campus (e.g. classrooms, laboratories, library/reading room, communications technology, etc.) and off-campus (e.g. marine station and research ponds). The aim is to provide a conducive environment for the exchange, creation, and application of scientific knowledge as well as personal development of the academic community.

MSSP development has included revision of the curriculum, refinement of course outlines and teaching materials, increasing the average percentage of face-to-face lectures (now > 90%), lecturer recruitment, lecturer capacity building through formal education (doctoral studies) and vocational training, and an increase in the number of Professors. In the field of cooperation, the department has established partnerships with several local, national, and international organizations, focused on marine education, research, and community development. Activities under these partnerships involve lecturers and students, enhancing academic interaction at internal, local, national and international levels and in some cases can assist students with their final research projects.
