Applied Marine Conservation (MSc)

This one year MSc degree focuses on core and specialist competences in key themes of fisheries, marine conservation; sustainability and ecosystem based management.

Course Highlights

• Teaching by research-active staff working in the field of applied marine conservation with particular interest in fisheries, marine mammals and seabirds.
• An applied degree with fieldwork, practicals and 100% continuous assessment.
• A major research thesis, in collaboration with a supervisor from GMIT and a supervisor from an external organisation.

Programme Modules

All taught modules are 5 ECTS and 100% continuous assessment.

Taught elements are completed in Semester 1 and include the following:

1. Ecology of Top Predators in Marine Systems
2. Secondary Impacts of Harvest on Wild Populations and Ecosystems
3. Applied Geographic Information Systems
4. Data Analysis Using R and R Studio
5. Seabird and Marine Mammal Population Assessment techniques
6. Life History Strategies and Trade-offs

The Research thesis is a year-long module and is worth 60 ECTS.

Graduates will be well prepared for careers in applied marine conservation or may continue to PhD research.
