Aims

To introduce postgraduate students from largely non-engineering backgrounds to, and provide an awareness of, the technological, economic, environmental and resource aspects of a range of renewable energy technologies. This module will focus on hydro, wind, wave and tidal energy.

Outline Of Syllabus

Renewable Energy Resources - what, where and their characteristics.
Renewable Energy technologies -water and wind, wave and tidal.

Pre-school material

Normally requires 50 hours of study.

Pre-school material enables you to revise and review prerequisite material so that the intensive school can be run efficiently and effectively. The materials will be available six to eight weeks before the intensive school takes place.

You will undertake a pre-school assignment (30% of the module mark) which you will submit on the first day of the intensive school.

One week intensive school

Has an approximate contact time of 35 hours.

The intensive school includes lectures, case studies, tutorials, presentations, and discussions.

You will sit an examination (40% of the module mark) during this intensive teaching week.

Post-school material

Requires 15 hours of study.

This material consolidates the module learning.

Post-school material involves completion of a post-school assignment (30% of the module mark) which you will submit eight weeks after the intensive school.

Prerequisites

Familiarity, preferably at Bachelor degree level (or equivalent prior experience or accredited learning) with critical evaluation of complex issues involving finance, planning, policy, management, etc coupled with an awareness of economic, environmental, political and societal contexts. Evidence (possibly pre-Bachelor degree level) of some basic mathematical facility and awareness of scientific thought. For non-native speakers, evidence of English language competence (to a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with higher levels of attainment strongly recommended).

At the end of this modules students should be able to demonstrate understanding of the practical implementation associated with engineering systems and processes in renewable energy systems.
Students will be able to identify problems and critically appraise solutions for engineering systems.
Students will be able to identify and utilise data associated with generation and energy conversion systems.
