Course format On-site
Datum 2021-02-15 - 2021-03-28
Cost 17500 SEK

The course aim is on the interaction between the oceans and the global climate over geological timescales, with a focus on dating and the use of proxy variables for reconstruction of past environmental conditions in the oceans. An overarching goal is to provide insights about the scientific process.

This course adresses:

  • interactions between the different components of the Earth’s climate system (atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere)
  • development of the Earth’s climate system on geological timescales
  • use of paleoenvironmental archives including terrestrial and marine sediment sequences as well as ice cores
  • evaluation and interpretation of paleoclimatic proxy data.

Prerequisites

For admission to the course, knowledge equivalent to a bachelor's degree is required, which must include at least 90 ECTS credits in geology, geosciences, biogeochemistry, or environmental science. English 6 or equivalent. Information about entry requirements on universityadmissions.se

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to be able to:

  • describe the drivers and factors controlling processes in past climates
  • describe how climatic information from paleoenvironmental archives is extracted and interpreted
  • independently search for and find relevant literature
  • evaluate scientific information that describes paleoclimatic data
  • present scientific information in both written and oral forms
