Overview
Centre for Marine Science and Technology (CMST) is a center dedicated for the effective and sustainable use of marine bioresources for the welfare of humans. This is an off-campus center of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, situated at Rajakamangalam, Kanyakumari District, near the Arabian Sea coast. Research and teaching are the two main activities of the center. The center was started in 1991 and till 2017 it has produced 132 Ph.D. scholars. In 2017, for the first time in India, M. Sc. Marine Science integrated program was started, apart from these, two other (3 year UG degree in Zoology plus 2 year PG in Marine Science), postgraduate courses such as M.Sc in Marine Biotechnology and M. Sc in Microbiology are being offered. The center has seven labs and sophisticated instrumentations. CMST serves as a training center for students from different colleges and also serves as a marine resource education center for many school children. The unique strength of CMST is expertise in Marine Science and Biotechnology. Out of the seven faculties, three are molecular Biologists. CMST has initiated the setting up of Marine Incubation Centre (MIC). MIC had two startups, Nexus Marine and Bacoclean being started. Another six startups are in the proof of concept stage.
Aim of CMST : CMST aims to generate good manpower, high-quality research findings and products from marine resources.
Vision of CMST : To become a national topper Marine Science Institute in India by 2025 in quality of courses and the number of papers, patents, and STARTUPS it produces.
Mission of CMST : To educate the students, scholars on the importance and sustainable use of marine resources. To build up the top class marine scientist, in the products they produce. To be a center to foster public-private partnership in the economic development of India.
