Course content
Basic concepts and mathematical methods in wave theory. Dispersion, phase and group velocity, wave energy, Fourier integrals, stationary phase, the WKB method, ray theory. Application on surface waves, wave resistance, oscillations in closed and open basins, internal waves, Kelvin waves. Nonlinear effects, Stokes waves, solitons, breaking waves.
Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
It will be an advantage to have taken MEK3230 – Fluid Mechanics, MEK2200 – Continuum Mechanics/MEK4220 – Continuum Mechanics (discontinued) and MAT3360 – Introduction to Partial Differential Equations.
Application procedure
Students at UiO register for courses and exams in Studentweb.
Learning outcomes
To give an introduction to the basic concepts of hydrodynamic wave theory, the basis for computation of wave loads on ships and marine structures, for flood waves (tsunamis) and tides.
