This Master's degree programme is for you who are interested to be a part of the fourth industrial revolution in maritime technology.

The Master's degree programme in Autonomous Maritime Operation comprises 60 ECTS and the degree title is Master of Engineering, Autonomous Maritime Operations.

The programme has a special focus concerning the digitalization of maritime operations. The studies include 6 courses of relevant subjects each of an extent of 5 credits. Following subjects are covered:

  • Introduction to studies and introduction to Marine operations
  • Autonomous vessels-automation
  • Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Human-Machine Interaction
  • Remote Operations
  • Cyber Security and Connectivity
  • Classification, Qualification and Safety Perspectives

The studies are optimized for flexible learning and studying, parallel with fulltime employment ashore or at sea. The meetings are used for solving study technical problems and some lecturing. The major part of the studies and instruction is conducted using a learning platform.

Eligibility to Apply and Application

Eligibility to apply to this programme is conferred by an appropriate UAS Bachelor’s degree or another appropriate higher education degree and at least two years of subsequent work experience in a relevant field. An appropriate Bachelor's degree in a related field for this programme can be Bachelor of Marine Technology, sjökapten (YH) or merikapteeni (AMK); Bachelor of Engineering (seafaring), ingenjör (YH) i sjöfart or merenkulun insinööri (AMK); or another appropriate Bachelor's degree completed in a relevant field such as maritime, marine engineering, automation engineering or ICT engineering.

Language of Instruction

The studies are conducted in English.

Final Project

The Master's thesis is a demanding development project or research work combining theory, praxis and creation of new knowledge. The thesis subject and aim are based on requirements and needs of the maritime field. The theme of the thesis (30 ECTS) must be related to the fields studied, preferably agreed upon with an industry representative. The thesis thus works as a bridge between study and work, and gives students the opportunity to apply theoretical thinking to practical problems.

Alternatives for the thesis are, for example:

  • an investigation (e.g., investigation, mapping, analysis and / or evaluation)
  • a development project (e.g. development of working methods or activities)
  • product development (such as a prototype or a model)

Qualification

Under the Finnish legislation, a person who has completed a Master's degree is qualified for posts or positions for which the qualification requirement is a second-cycle higher education degree. In some cases, the qualification requirement also includes the completion of studies in certain specified fields of study. The degree falls under the Article 11 of the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications, level e.
