Are you a master or PhD student in the field of marine science, conservation, biology or related fields from the Mediterranean Sea basin? You cannot miss this opportunity to apply to participate in the #SaveTheWave Summer school organized in partnership with the Università degli Studi di Bari and with the support of E.ON

The Summer School on Ecosystem Regeneration & Ocean Literacy is a 5-day event (June 24-28, 2024) in the Tremiti Islands, Italy, dedicated to developing skills on Posidonia oceanica conservation, regeneration, monitoring, and communication. 

The Summer School will share an online self-paced module prior to the activities that will be held in presence in the Tremiti Islands (Apulia, South of Italy). The in-presence programme will host different guests and speakers.

All the activities will be held in English.

The Summer School on Ecosystem Regeneration & Ocean Literacy  is a project developed by UNESCO/IOC in collaboration with the University of Bari Aldo Moro and E.ON, in the context of the UN Ocean Decade (2021-2030).

Prerequisites

The Summer School will welcome 15 youths from EU and non-EU countries of the Mediterranean region who are students enrolled in Masters and PhD Programmes, or early career professionals in the field of marine science, conservation, marine biology or similar. We will also consider profiles from different backgrounds.

Application procedure

The deadline for applications is May 17, 2024, and successful candidates will be notified by May 24, 2024 

Participants will be selected according to the following criteria:

  • Gender balance
  • Geographical representation
  • Age range: up to 30 years old
  • Background: marine science, marine biology, marine ecology, natural sciences, conservation, and similar. We will also consider profiles from different backgrounds.

Grant opportunities

Accommodation in shared rooms and a social dinner will be provided for all participants. 
In addition, IOC/UNESCO will provide 2 grants that will cover the cost of transport (round trip).

Learning outcomes

The Summer School supports the following learning outcomes:

  • How to effectively work on conservation, restoration and monitoring of seagrass meadows and other coastal ecosystems
  • How to develop effective science communication and storytelling content
  • Engaging and interacting with local institutions and stakeholders
  • Becoming familiar with the objectives and actions of the UN Ocean Decade
